DESCRIPTIVE TEXT

DESCRIPTIVE TEXT

My beloved students, here is a summary of what descriptive text is. I hope this information can help you understand the text. Moreover, you can write an interesting descriptive text and finish the project. Remember KISS (Keep It Simple and Stupid).

A. Purpose/Social Function

      To describe a particular person/thing/place.

B. Generic Structure/Text Organization

  • Identification: Mention the particular person/thing/place you are going to describe.
e.g. Do you have any pets? I have one? It is a dog. I call it Blacky.

  • Description: Describe the physical features, quality, characteristics and additional information of the particular person/thing/place being described.
e.g. John is 20 years old. He is short and skinny. His skin is brown. He has long, curly, black hair. He has a flat nose and small ears. His face is round. Everybody likes him because he has a funny smile.

C. Language Features

  • The use of Simple Present Tense
e.g.: Jogjakarta has a lot of beautiful and interesting places.

  • The use of adjectives

e.g.: My dog, Blacky, is funny.

  • The use of degree of comparison

e.g.: John is taller than me.

  • The use of attributive has and have
e.g.: Bandung has more interesting places than Lampung.

  • The use of linking verbs
e.g.: Barbara is a famous student in my school. She looks happy.

D. The Difference Between Descriptive and Report Text

  • Descriptive text is a text describing a particular person/thing/place. For example, my dog, Blacky, has strong legs. (Here I describe my dog, Blacky. I am not describing other dogs or general dogs)
  • Report text tells information about something as a result of a systematic observation and analysis. For example, dogs are mammals. They can be our pet. (Here I tell information about dogs in general; not my dog, Blacky, or your dog)
